How long do you spend washing your face? A Los Angeles based esthetician thinks probably not long enough! Skincare professional Nayamka Roberts-Smith, known as @LABeautyologist on all social media platforms, went viral in January with her face-washing ritual dubbed the #60SecondRule.

The process explained:

The #60SecondRule is extremely simple and involves no special tools or gadgets. The 60 second rule involves massaging cleanser into the skin for a full 60 seconds before washing it off. Many people have shared photos of their unbelievable skin transformations after trying it out for just a couple of weeks. Remember to gently cleanse your eye and mouth area.

“Most people wash their face for only 15 seconds. The 60 Second Rule softens the skin & dissolves sebum blockages better. Texture & overall evenness improves.” Nayamka explains in the caption accompanying her YouTube tutorial. (watch below)

Why is this process so effective?

This process is designed to help you get the most out of the ingredients in your cleanser. Cleansing your face with your fingers for 60 seconds allows the ingredients in the cleanser to actually get to work. The dirt, grime and makeup that can accumulate on your skin is a lot harder to remove than most people realize. Washing the face for a bit longer gives the ingredients in your cleanser more of a chance to breakdown and dissolve any impurities. It also can encourage you to cleanse your skin with more care. As well as encourage you to remember to wash more overlooked areas, like your chin and around your hairline.

Many of Roberts-Smith’s supporters claim that her method helped them eliminate acne, tighten their pores and improve the overall texture and appearance of their skin. She also adds that she doesn’t recommend using cleansing brushes.

Pro tip: Apply the #60SecondRule to your skincare routine both in the morning and at night.
